Background of the Study

Prolonged hospitalization is common for cancer patients undergoing intensive treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. While these treatments are necessary for survival, extended hospital stays can have significant psychological effects on patients, including anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. Oncology nurses are at the forefront of providing support to these patients, yet the psychological toll of long-term hospitalization on cancer patients is not always adequately addressed. This study will examine the psychological effects of prolonged hospitalization on cancer patients at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

Statement of the Problem

While much attention is paid to the physical aspects of cancer treatment, the psychological effects of prolonged hospitalization on cancer patients are often overlooked. The emotional burden of extended hospital stays, especially without significant improvement in health, can lead to negative psychological outcomes, affecting patient recovery and well-being. This study aims to investigate these psychological effects and explore the role of oncology nurses in mitigating them.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the psychological effects of prolonged hospitalization on cancer patients at UPTH.
  2. To assess how oncology nurses can support cancer patients in managing the psychological effects of prolonged hospitalization.
  3. To explore the relationship between prolonged hospitalization and overall treatment outcomes in cancer patients.

Research Questions

  1. What are the psychological effects of prolonged hospitalization on cancer patients at UPTH?
  2. How do oncology nurses address the psychological needs of cancer patients during prolonged hospital stays?
  3. How does prolonged hospitalization affect cancer patients' treatment adherence and recovery?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Prolonged hospitalization leads to negative psychological outcomes such as anxiety and depression in cancer patients.
  2. Oncology nurses’ psychological support reduces the negative effects of prolonged hospitalization on cancer patients.
  3. Prolonged hospitalization negatively affects cancer patients’ treatment adherence and recovery outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on cancer patients who have been hospitalized for extended periods at UPTH. Limitations may include variations in the patients' psychological responses and the inability to generalize the findings beyond UPTH.

Definitions of Terms

  • Prolonged Hospitalization: An extended stay in the hospital, often due to ongoing cancer treatment, surgeries, or complications.
  • Psychological Effects: Mental and emotional responses, such as anxiety, depression, or stress, that result from prolonged illness or hospitalization.
  • Oncology Nurses: Nurses who specialize in providing care to cancer patients, focusing on both physical and emotional aspects of treatment.
